Zohran Mamdani’s Presence at Muharram Majlis Sparks Praise and Criticism Online

New York City’s Democratic Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani made headlines after he was spotted attending Muharram majalis at the Al Khoei Center in Jamaica, Queens, on the solemn day of Ashura. Mamdani, the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Professor Mehmood Mamdani, recently defeated former New York Mayor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, securing his position as the party’s official mayoral candidate. His appearance at the Majlis — a gathering commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) — was seen by many as a gesture of respect toward the Muslim community. Majalis are an integral part of the Islamic tradition, honouring the legacy of Imam Hussain (a.s.), whose stand for justice, compassion, and truth continues to inspire millions worldwide. Community members at the Al Khoei Center expressed appreciation, with many highlighting the significance of future leadership showing solidarity with religious and cultural practices. “It’s beautiful to see the future leadership of NYC present here as part of this tradition,” said one attendee. However, Mamdani’s presence at the Majlis sparked mixed reactions online. While many praised his participation, others brought up his earlier attendance at a Gay Pride Parade in March this year, questioning his alignment with traditional values. Netizens shared their views on Instagram: @sulaiman_matin posted, “Big respect wallahi, not everyone remembers the Akhirah when the Dunya’s cheering for them, Mashallah.” @aizazehra commented, “I pray for his health and safety. May Allah ease his path to success and enable him to bring justice and leadership that the people of New York need.” Yet, criticism followed from @abdullahbhattieasy, who wrote, “Is this before or after attending his gay parade? Such a person should not be supported by the Muslim community, neither is this the teaching or way of Ahlul Bayt.” The 2025 New York City Mayoral Election is scheduled for November 4, and Mamdani is considered the frontrunner despite ongoing smear campaigns by political opponents.
